Saturday schedule

Don’t forget, this Saturday at 1:00 in the South Veranda at Eagle Point Park is our CFD picnic!  Bring friends, family, chairs if you have them, games, drinks, whatever…it should be a good time!  I’ll supply burgers and brats, but if you want to bring a dish to pass or a side, the grills will be hot.

If you want to get your workout in, please come to the 9:00 class, as I will not be holding a 10:00 class so that I can get everything ready for the picnic.  Also, you can RSVP to the picnic on WODhopper if you’re not a Facebook user and can’t join the group that way.

See you all there!

CFD social!

Hey guys, it’s that time of the year when we can enjoy the nice weather and our awesome community we’ve built together.  Mark your calendars–July 20th, let’s all get together for a CFD party at the park!  BYO-food and drinks if you have something in particular you want, otherwise I’ll supply some burgers and brats to grill out.  Hopefully it’s a nice day!

July 20th at Eagle Point Park starting at 1:00pm–family and friends are encouraged to come and very welcome!  We will be located at the South Veranda, which isn’t a very big pavillion (all the parks are really booked up this summer!).  If you have your own chairs, it might not be a bad idea to bring them!  Also, remember it’s $1 per car to enter the park.

Thanks and I hope to see you all there!

Holiday hours

Happy Independence Day, everyone!  Here is a posting of our schedule this week to accommodate for the holiday.  We wish you all a happy, safe, and fun 4th and look forward to hitting this week hard!

July 3rd:  classes as normal, except no clinic at 7:30pm

July 4th:  CLOSED

July 5th:  9:30am and 5:30pm classes only

See you there!

Positive changes

There have been some relatively significant changes implemented gradually these last couple of months.  A fair amount of anxiety and a LOT of thought went into each incremental step.  It’s strange sometimes to look back and think that we’ve been running classes steadily now for over a year and a half at our current location.  The process has been full of learning experiences on our part and has therefore warranted a necessary amount of evolution in everything we do, from programming to day-to-day operations.

My personality is very much that of a person who doesn’t like to settle for average.  I’m never satisfied or content with anything I do–I always critique myself and think of ways to do it better next time.  This holds especially true to running my business.  Much of my ‘free’ time is spent doing things that make operations and the athlete’s experience at CFD run smoother and be more effective.

With that said, I’m proud to be able to take a step back and see things for what they are:  an outstanding community of people, ranging from fresh out of Foundations to athletes who have been with me since Day 1.  Our retention rate is higher than ever, our people are fitter–and healthier–than ever, and the business continues to grow.  I’m sure you’ve all noticed–our classes are starting to burst at the seams pretty regularly!  We are quickly outgrowing our little 3,000 sq/ft warehouse we started in, which is a problem I was only HOPING to be dealing with at the end of my 2-year lease!  Even with undercutting competition, time has proven to me that my CFD family is loyal, committed, and some of the hardest-working people I’ve ever had the honor of working with and alongside.

I wanted to be able to publicly state that I am currently looking for a new location to expand CFD!  I think we all would agree that we could use a little more elbow room, and maybe multiple bathrooms and showers would come in handy, wouldn’t you say..?  I wouldn’t be in this position if it wasn’t for each and every one of you, and for that, I wanted to thank you all.  Thank you for your loyalty.  Thank you all for your commitment to the pursuit of fitness.  Thank you for trusting in my judgement and know that I couldn’t have done it without support from other great coaches and continuing education.  I couldn’t get up and do what I love to do each and every day if it wasn’t for the support of the CFD community.  Moving to Dubuque was one of the best decisions I have made in my life.

I will be planning a social event for us all in the near future.  Now that the weather is nice, I think we are overdue for a chance for all of us to get together and enjoy the community we built together.  Long-live CFD!

…To our continuing improvements in health, fitness, and community!

Jeff’s accident

Our thoughts go out to Jeff Oaks who was in a bad motocross accident this last weekend. From the sounds of it, he was pretty busted up. Jeff, keep your spirits up my friend; broken bodies can be healed. CFD will still be here for you when you’re back on your feet!

If anyone has any information about where he’s at, please let us know!

Jeff: To your health and recovery, brother. Rest up.

CFD meeting

Hey everyone!  I scheduled a time slot on WODhopper for 7:30pm Tuesday night (6/11) labeled ‘CFD meeting.’  I would like this chance to address questions and concerns regarding the new programming layout, say my piece about why these changes have been made, and explain a little more in-depth about the Fitness/Performance division and how to apply it to each athlete.  Here are the topics of the meeting, as well as leaving plenty of time for questions:

-Fitness/Performance programming

-Nutrition concerns

—fitness/wellness nutrition

—performance nutrition

—…and the differences between the two!

I hope many of you are able to make it!

Thanks for your time!

April’s blog/Paleo challenge winner

Change is hard.  As human beings, we are secure in the familiar.  Many of us fear change, and try to hide from it.  We make excuses or look for the easy way out when what would benefit us the most is to make a BIG F***ING CHANGE.  I’m right there with all of you; I’ve hung on to terrible relationships, gone back to sugar and gluten at times, and I get comfortable in the ordinary and routine.  However, I know that every time I have made significant changes in my life, good things have happened.  It may have been hard at first with lots of crying and swearing, but in the long run the changes have made me a better person.  They have made me tougher, more confident, and much more self-aware.

Every day we are faced with choices that will take us down the paved road of common and conventional, or the dirt path of unknown and extraordinary.  Although most days we will take the paved road, don’t be afraid of the changes in your life and that dirt path.  You may not be able to see what’s at the end of it, but more often than not it’s going to be something remarkable.

Tammi Stribling ventured down the dirt path when she joined CrossFit Dubuque in February.  She continued down that path by participating in the Whole Food/Paleo Challenge in the month of April, and her life will never be the same.  I received the email below as the challenge came to a close, and both Phil and I decided she deserved to be the “winner” based on how much her life has been impacted by the changes she has made.

Many more of you participated in the Challenge in the month of April and overcame the difficulties of change.  After talking with nearly all of you, I can confidently say that you are all winners, and I am so proud of everyone!  Stay the course, and remember that it may not always be easy, but it will be worth it.

Congratulations Tammi!  You are dead-on when you say “this is an amazing start to an incredible journey!”  Thank you for sharing your story with CrossFit Dubuque and the community.

-Coach April

My “case” isn’t so much a case as to why I should win as much as it is a testimony to the beginning of my journey to being the best version of me that I can be.  Ha, deep right?

So here’s the real deal. When my brother tried to get me to come check out CrossFit, I flat out refused. I gave him every excuse I could think of: I was “too old, too outta shape, I smoked, I was too busy, I have red hair, it’s raining”….blah blah blah….bottom line, I was too scared. Scared I couldn’t do it; that I would fail miserably and be embarrassed in the process.  I did eventually end up at an intro class, frankly because I was tired of the brow beating from Tim, Jeremy and Krissy.  I wasn’t sure if it was really for me, but I agreed to go through foundations and give it at least a month. I honestly thought I would give it a month and be done, so they would all get off my back. I wasn’t, however, prepared for what actually went down.

From the first intro class I felt something I haven’t felt in a long time. Thoroughly inspired, exhausted, beat up, like I wanted to die, and by the way, “when does that foundations class start?” All I knew that there was something about this group of athletes, something that they had that I wanted. Not to be the fittest or fastest than anyone else, but to be fitter and faster than ME.

Through February and March, I went to WOD, but still fed my body processed, easy, convenient,  FAT PEOPLE FOOD – and I was still was smoking. I was a little better off than before CrossFit Dubuque, and I was thrilled every time I didn’t pass out or die, but I was still not feeling that “whatever it was” I was looking for. Then April’s Whole Food/Paleo Challenge began, and that was where everything turned around for me.

Over the past 33 days my life has improved exponentially. I remained strict to the challenge and haven’t smoked (YAY ME)!!!  Prior to this, I have never paid any attention to what I ate. I didn’t read labels, hated to cook and plan, and thought the whole process of mealtime was way over-rated. My eating habits ranged from starvation, (seriously), to eating an entire bag of Ruffles with French onion dip in one sitting and calling it dinner. Caffeine and nicotine were staples and the corner stones of my food pyramid. I have always had a horrific relationship with food, and this challenge forced me to step outside my comfort zone and make a change. Before this challenge I felt weak and impulsive and was seriously surprised I made it through.

So I guess what I have discovered is far more than eating clean.  I found out that I am stronger than I thought; I can set goals and achieve them. That I do have that “whatever it was” those people had that I thought I didn’t. I learned that there is this really cool group of f***ing maniacs that believe in me way more than I believe in myself; who will kick my ass, piss me off and not let me settle for less then I am capable of.  Who hold me accountable, tell what I need to hear – not what I want to hea,; and who truly put up with my sassy, sarcastic, ask-a-million questions (make-nice-Mike-wanna-be-angry-Mike) punk ass. And for that and every ounce of encouragement, for pushing me harder than I have ever been pushed, and for everything I am sure I haven’t mentioned THANK YOU….this has been an amazing start to an incredible journey….!!!

Goals Board Blog

Oh hey there. It’s me. The Goals Board here at CFD. Didn’t realize I was still here? Well I am!!

For those of you who have written on me, how are you doing? Have you reached your goal? Have you completely forgotten about it?!

You know the purpose of having me is to build toward something, right? To hold yourself accountable. To make you better. To realize your weaknesses and turn them into your strengths.

It takes work.

It takes more then just saying it or writing it down. It takes planning, practice, a little honesty, and a lot of determination.

If you’ve already met your goal, that’s awesome! Congrats! Now set a new one! If you haven’t met your goal, don’t be discouraged. It can be frustrating to learn and master the techniques of certain movements (Not that I know that exactly, since I’m a white board). But keep with it! Set a new date and stick to your plan of attack. If you are patient and determined enough, it’ll happen for you.

For those of you who haven’t written on me….what are you waiting for??

Pick a goal, when you want to accomplish it by, and what you plan to do to make it happen. What’s the worst thing that could happen? It’ll force you to work on the things you suck at, and in the end, you’ll only be kicking more ass than you already do (or you’ll have a fictitious ‘white board’ call you out).  Either way. CFD Rules!
