Gearing up for the Open

Hello all!  If you haven’t registered yet for the 2014 Open, you need to get on it soon!  Click here for more information and to register.  Make sure you sign up as a member on the CFD team when you register!

Here are some things you’ll need to know about this year’s competition season:

1)  For those of you who need video of your workouts, you are responsible for dealing with that.  Make sure you understand the requirements that are necessary in order for your video to be valid.

2)  Test days will be provided–make sure you are able to test each week.  Saturday at 10:00am will be a dedicated Open test time for those of you who need video.  Additional test time slots will be announced depending on how they best fit in the schedule.

We hope to have a fun and safe competition season this year.  Best of luck to all athletes!

CFD update

Hey everyone, just a heads up on the new facility:

–the water is back on, so we’re good to go with that!  All bathrooms are up and running.

–the turf has been measured, re-measured, and is currently being ordered.  Within a few weeks, we’ll be able to have it installed.  Until then, due to the exposed concrete, things will probably remain a bit dusty.  Please bear with us during the transition period!

Thanks to all of you who have been supporting CFD these last couple years and made this expansion possible!  I hope you are all as excited about the extra space as I am!

–Coach Phil

Pardon our dust

We are excited to be open for our first day at the new location, 3080 Cedar Crest Ct!  I hope you can all pardon our dust through the next few weeks while we finish setting everything up.  We’re pretty much up and ready to go for tomorrow’s work, but there are some things you should all know before you come in…

–As of five minutes ago (I just left the box to post the workout for tomorrow), there’s STILL no water due to pipes freezing on the other side of the building.  Hopefully this gets resolved very soon, but worst-case scenario we won’t have working bathrooms at all tomorrow morning.

–It’s still a work in progress, so please be cautious of work tools and dust.  I’ll do my best to keep that kind of stuff away from the classes, but there’s still a lot of work left to do.

–astroturf is being quoted and will be installed within the next few weeks.  Until then, half of the floor will be bare concrete.  Our usable area right now is about the same size as our entire old space though, so we should be ok!

–The new signage will be going up sometime tomorrow, but until then the building isn’t marked.  Trust me–when the sign goes up, you’ll know where CFD is located!

Thank you all in advance for your patience and understanding during this transition period.  It’s my biggest goal to not impede on anyone’s training experience during the move, and I’m glad we are able to remain on schedule at least with the workouts and be ready to go at 5:15 tomorrow morning.  I can’t possibly thank all of you enough who made it out this weekend to help it all go as smooth as it did.  It really shows the amazing quality of character so many of you have to come help with such an exciting undertaking.  Thank you all so very much.

I’ll see you all bright and early!

THE BIG MOVE!!!

We are proud to announce that this Saturday, Feb 8, we will be moving to our new 6080 sq. ft facility!  Classes will be cancelled on Saturday in order to help facilitate the move–I’ll be there at 8:00am to start and will work until we’re done.  If any volunteers would like to help move equipment and set up the rig, it would be much appreciated!

I’m so very excited to start the next evolution of CFD will you all.

See you soon!

There will be 2 diagnostic workouts given (one at the beginning and one at the end of the camp), as well as some good lecture material.  Make sure you bring your gear, whatever you do for recovery, and something to take notes on.

I’m looking forward to hosting this great event and will see you all soon!

Announcements

Hello CFD!  I have some announcements I’d like to make:

The move should be happening within the next few weeks. I will let everyone know as soon as I have a solid date, but when it happens, it’ll happen fast!  My goal is to have the facility up and functional over a weekend so we don’t miss a beat.

A big Rogue Fitness order is coming in tomorrow (Tuesday) with more bars, 1000# of bumper plates, racks, wall balls, rowers, an assault bike, and more ropes and rings to hang at the new facility, as well as all the expansion pieces necessary to approximately double our existing pull-up rig.

Saturday, January 25th will be a CFD Open Athlete Camp from 9-1.  There will be a $20/athlete charge at the door (cash please), and it will be well worth the money.  What I have planned for the camp will include some workout testers and lecture material that will get everyone geared up for the Open and beyond.  This will be a very useful camp that I strongly encourage all CFD athletes who want to take their fitness to the next level to attend.  Signup will be on WODhopper–please RSVP so I can get a head count!

There will be an 8:00 WOD scheduled for the 25th in order to make room for the athlete camp being held at CFD.  So, for those of you not interested in the camp, you’ll still get your Saturday workout…you’ll just have to drag your ass out of bed a bit earlier that day!

As always, please email or catch me for questions and/or feedback.  I’m always striving to keep CFD’s reputation as the best affiliate in town, and we wouldn’t be where we are at if it weren’t for each and every one of you guys doing your part.

Phil’s New Year’s blog

Here’s my New Year’s rant–I’ll try to keep it short but it’s not going to be all rainbows and unicorns!  If you’re offended by some harsh language, you might want to skip this blog (though I think everyone could use a dose of tough love once in a while).

‘Tis the season to make a bunch of resolutions and talk about all the great things you’re going to accomplish this year.  It’s a time to ‘start anew’ and it’s certainly the popular thing to do this time of the year.  That’s all a good thing, under one condition–you actually follow through with what you’re saying.

I meet new people every single week who come to me with all the best intentions and goals set in place; this isn’t a new phenomenon in my weekly schedule.  People from different backgrounds, different interpretations of fitness, and sometimes differing goals–it’s always a fun conversation and it’s one of my favorite parts of the job!  Of course, I’m referring to fitness and health-related goals, but I think the qualities of following through with your decision(s) bleeds over into other aspects of your life, and I’d like to talk about some common themes I see in people’s goal-setting skills (or in some cases, complete lack thereof).

One type of person makes small, realistic goals.  Each ‘micro goal’ is set to be realistic, attainable, and incrementally closer to a bigger, ‘macro goal.’  Tiny step by tiny step, they go through the process (whatever that may be) to achieve the end result (if there even IS an end result; in regards to fitness, you can constantly strive to improve).  I’ve made it through plenty of trials I thought I surely wouldn’t just with that simple process–from terrible workouts, shitty deployments in awful places of the world, a long work week, tough semesters at school, etc.  Get through the day, get through the workout, just SHOW UP, or whatever it takes to get one step closer to wherever it is you’re going.

In order to succeed with this type of goal-setting you must subscribe to the idea of a long-game approach to whatever it is you’re trying to achieve.  Great things don’t happen overnight, or a week, month, or many times in a single year.  It takes many–THOUSANDS–small, tiny, seemingly insignificant victories to eventually add up to a big success.

Another type of person makes huge, unrealistic goals with no real plan in regards to getting from point A to point B (or a better analogy would say getting from point A to point Z without the first clue as to what might come after A in the first place).  You might have every best intention, but without the plan and follow-through, you’re just being a windbag.  Don’t fail–or QUIT–because you allowed yourself to be overwhelmed by unrealistic deadlines and standards you imposed on yourself for no reason other than to subconsciously set yourself up for failure.  I see it happen ALL THE FUCKING TIME.  There is no such thing as huge improvements done really fast.  Huge improvements in anything happen over time and as the result of lots of hard work.  Period.

One last note–it shouldn’t require a particular date displayed on your calendar to make you want to be better than you were yesterday.  That’s hopping on a bandwagon and almost always a crock of bullshit.  You’re not going to suddenly ‘flip a switch’ and change every shitty thing about your lifestyle overnight just because the calendar has a different numeral on it.  It’s unsustainable, unrealistic, and will set 99% of people up for failure.  Just wait–across the country, gym memberships skyrocket in January and plummet in February.  I won’t have it–if you’re here for the bandwagon, you can fail somewhere else.  If you’re here to legitimately begin incremental changes to improve your lifestyle and health, then welcome to the CFD community!  I’m honored to be among the ranks of people who CONSISTENTLY care about their health and well being, and hope more people join us in 2014!

Thanks for reading, and I hope this rant was constructive–it was certainly meant to be!  RLTW <1>

Coach April’s blog

Not all goals are created equal. Here is some advice to start you off on the right track in 2014.

As we enter into a New Year, inevitably, people will be thinking about resolutions and new goals. It kind of comes with the territory as one year ends, and another one begins. We reflect on the past: the good, the bad, the ugly; and we look forward to everything we will do differently this year and into the future.

As a coach of a collegiate volleyball team, I am no stranger to setting goals; we set goals before season, off-season, spring season, and for any and every reason you could imagine. Until very recently, I thought it was the best way to motivate my players and accomplish the things our program is trying to do. In reflection of this past season I realize that our goals actually did the opposite. We aimed too high, too soon. The absolute goal of “winning conference” paralyzed our team – more than just physically. As a coach, I need to do a better job of leading the “goals” discussion, especially since I am working with young women.

Here are a few things that happened among the team as a result:

– The team believed that just because they wanted it enough, said it out loud, and put it down on paper, that their absolute goal would come true. They either didn’t want to put in the day to day hard work that it takes to become a championship team, or didn’t realize the kind of commitment that it truly takes.

– When the absolute goal was no longer attainable, the team became dejected and it was incredibly hard for them to stay focused, motivated, and intense in practice. We became stagnant and did not improve as much as we could have. There was far too little accountability, and not enough self-reflection by the players. Instead, blame was placed on each other, the team, and the coaching staff.

I learned a lot from this past season, especially from the mistakes I made. I wanted to share them with you, so as you are setting your own personal fitness goals for 2014, you don’t make the same errors.

– When you are setting goals, don’t be too focused on the final result. There are always going to be things to challenge you, but you have to figure out where you are at and start from the beginning. If I said that my goal was to win the CrossFit Games, I hope that you all would help me to realize there are a million more important goals that need to be accomplished before that should even be an idea in my head. Start small. Think about those little things you need to do EVERY DAY. Before you worry about handstand push-ups, getting that muscle up, or snatching your body weight; focus on your overall strength, your squat form, your overhead position, mobility, eating healthy, and coming in to CFD 5 to 6 days a week focused and ready to improve. If you aren’t already doing those little things, the big things aren’t likely to ever happen.

– Staying focused on the small steps will also help you from becoming disappointed in yourself and your progress. If you are thinking about how to lose 50 lbs by summer, the end goal is likely to overwhelm you. Instead of worrying about the final number on the scale, take it meal by meal, day by day, week by week. Some meals aren’t going to be perfect, but one or two bad days doesn’t have to derail your whole week. Even if you can’t quite reach your stated goal, don’t let the results ruin your present accomplishments, and thwart your future efforts.

– That being said, it doesn’t mean that you can’t or shouldn’t have a long term goal as long as you realize the level of commitment and length of time it’s going to take to accomplish it. Saying out loud that “I will beat Sam Briggs in a rowing competition” no matter how much I believe or want it, will not just make it happen. Is that something I can have the in back of my mind when I’m doing 800 meter repeats and hating my life? Sure! But it’s important to stay realistic with any goals you are setting based on how hard you are WILLING AND ABLE to work. Talk is cheap, and it’s far easier to set goals than it is to follow through on them.

If you fail to accomplish your goals, be ready to reflect and hold yourself accountable, instead of blaming your lack of success on things outside of your control. Ask yourself these questions and learn from your mistakes: Did I come into the box 3 to 6 days a week, fully focused, intense and ready to work as hard as I possibly can? Am I eating healthy to fuel my body? Am I spending time outside of class to work on the skills that will help me along the way? Am I willing to sacrifice my social life to put in 7-8 hours of sleep every night for recovery? Am I surrounding myself with the type of people who will help me reach my goals? Do I need to re-evaluate my goals and be more realistic with what is attainable?

The great thing about the beautiful people from CFD reading this blog is that you understand the word COMMITMENT. You have all committed to becoming happier, healthier, and fit just by joining our community. That point cannot be understated. Taking an active role in your health and well-being is not something that a majority of the population is willing to do, and that should give you a lot of pride and confidence. I love this environment, and it’s inspiring to be surrounded by people who are striving to get better every day no matter what their long-term goals are.

Life is short; live for the now! The past teaches us many lessons and the future is important, but if you don’t enjoy who you are, what you are attaining, and the relationships you are creating and sustaining, not a whole lot else matters. That being said, my goal or resolution for 2014 is fairly simple. It’s to “be present.”

Good luck with your goal setting and let’s make 2014 awesome—one day at a time!

-Coach April

2013 blog

Hey CFD, it’s the end of 2013 and I have some things I’d like to bring up.  I thought about trying to do it at the 2-year party, but figured this would be a better way to get news out to everyone.

First of all, it’s been a great year at CFD!  Continued growth throughout the year has definitely kept me and the entire CFD staff busy and allowed us to start making the move to expand.  We will be doubling our square footage early this next year, with the move date yet to be announced.

I couldn’t have done this without each and every one of you paying your dues and being a part of our journey together.  I have a lot of pride in our reputation and take my role as a coach very seriously.  It’s good to know that my efforts to continue my education have been paying off–our community is getting stronger and fitter, and it wouldn’t happen if all of you wouldn’t put in the effort.  My thanks to each and every one of you who show up and do the work!

THINGS YOU DO AND CAN CONTINUE TO DO TO HELP OUR COMMUNITY GROW

–Represent CFD well!  All of you are a walking advertisement, and I hope you all take as much pride in our community we have together as I do.

–Social media and word of mouth has been one of our biggest contributors to new members.  ‘Like’ us on Facebook, Rate us on Facebook/Yelp, re-post and share status updates from CFD, tag the box, show off your CFD apparel and bumper stickers, and otherwise be an active member! I can’t thank you all enough for supporting our community and my livelihood.

UPCOMING CHANGES

–THE BIG MOVE!  Date TBA

–Pricing restructure–some things that will change will be offering free clinics to unlimited members, as well as goal/nutrition consultation offered with your membership quarterly.  I haven’t changed prices since we opened, and we are overdue for some restructuring, to include commitment incentives.  I want to reward our CFD members who can show support by committing to longer time periods.  More details to be announced when the time comes!

–A lot more equipment is coming 🙂

–CFD shirts, tanks, and hoodies will be here VERY soon!

NOW WHAT?

It’s time to start thinking about some goals to establish for 2014!

–What did you follow through with last year?

–What DIDN’T you follow through with, and why not?

–Why are you here?  Have a goal!

***if you need help establishing direction or having this conversation, don’t hesitate to ask a coach or arrange a meeting!

As always, my sincere thanks to each and every one of you for being part of the family.  I had a great 2013 with all of you and can’t wait to see what 2014 will bring our community.

2-year party

Don’t forget, this Saturday the 28th is CFD’s 2-year anniversary party!  We will be kicking things off at 1:00pm.  Some snacks and beverages will be provided, but if you have something in particular you’d like to bring, please do!  We hope to see many of you here to celebrate with us, and as always, family and friends are more than welcome!

Also, please note that there will only be a 9:00am workout time that day–I’ll need the time to do MY workout as well as get ready for the party!  Anyone who shows up at 10:00 because they didn’t read this message or check WODhopper gets to row 8x800m repeats with me at 10:00!
