Upcoming services

CrossFitters:  men and women, young and old, big and small.  We come in many shapes and sizes, but we have one thing in common—a drive to be better, regardless of the hand we’re dealt.  Regardless of our starting point.  Regardless of our excuses.  It inspires me every single time I have a great class of hard-working people in my presence.

In an effort to make CFD the place to be, I have put some thought into offering some additional services in order to add value to your experience and your journey as a CrossFitter here in Dubuque.

In the coming weeks, look for another round of a Strength Gain Challenge!  I’m in the process of getting another one put together, and we will be implementing that soon.

Also, in addition to that, I am meeting up with Coach John this week, who is an incredible gymnast (if you’ve never had the pleasure of trying to keep up with him doing any bodyweight movements before!) and starting the process of having him write a gymnastic program for the CFD population.

What does this mean to you as an athlete at CFD?

CHOICES!  It means you have the option of supplementing your standard class training with extra volume of strength work and/or gymnastics progressions to get you better even faster.

More details are in the works, but just know that it is my #1 priority to make your experience at CFD as fulfilling as I can.  With fall approaching, let’s start getting into that mindset of buckling down and taking our abilities to the next level TOGETHER!

Let’s get to work, CFD!

Hey CFDers

I have had the honor of being a coach here at CrossFit Dubuque for the past 3 years. During that time I’ve seen a lot of faces come and go. We have a ton of new people coming in right now and I wanted to give a quick note out to everyone from the coaches perspective.

CFD is your sanctuary. It is not only the place you go to get in better shape, but it is the place you go when your day going south! Boss is on your case, neighbor is pissing you off, spouse and/or kids are driving you crazy. CFD is the temple of vented frustrations. And it should be. As a coach over the last 15 + years (full time anyway…) I’ve had to play armchair shrink as much as fixing a squat. Maybe more.

For those of you that have been around me for a while, you know that sometimes (read days ending in Y) I don’t have truckloads of patience. Especially if you’re late, talking, not paying attention, singing, dancing…You get the idea. This isn’t news. Many of you have been on the receiving end of my ire at one time or another. DON’T take it personally!  Every once in a while, things happen. You’re probably going to get your chops busted by me. I can also guarantee that I will have forgotten it by the time the warm up is done. UNLESS…. this is a regular occurrence. In that case, it’s on you! I’ll keep on you, sometimes nicer than others, until whatever is earning my wrath gets fixed.  My coaching style is abrupt. As coaches, we have an hour with you 3-5 times a week. That’s not a lot of time. It is also our charge to make sure that not only the material gets presented in a professional manner, but everyone stays SAFE and we get through everything on time. This may mean that your coach gets a little short from time to time. It’s not personal. But have a little respect for your fellow athletes as well as your hard working coaches!

That said, if you are having a rough day, your focus isn’t there, your life is crashing down around you. Let us know! A quick “hey coach, I’m off today” goes a long way with us. I’ve done this for a fair amount of my life now and I’m pretty damn good at reading people. I’m not perfect. Neither are the rest of our coaches. We will try and pick up on nuances and moods, but any little bit helps!

It is my honor to help each and every one of you! Our goal every single day is to have you walk out of the box a little better than when you came in. I love what I do! Period. End of story. At the end of the day, all I want is for you to be a little better.

Have a great week!

Coach Mike

Post-comp blog

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m still kind of on cloud 9 from the In-House competition this last weekend.  It was such a great showing of the community, and I loved it for a few reasons:

1.  We train hard to be better at doing work.  Week after week, we grind away at our weaknesses and sharpen our strengths.  Once in a while, we need to express our improvements in our fitness by doing stuff like we did last Saturday.  Imagine going to football practice day after day but never being allowed to play the game—it would be frustrating and not as rewarding.  I highly encourage you all, whether you aspire to be competitive or not, to participate in things like this in the future.  After all, I intend to offer them In-House like this every couple months just for that reason alone:  to offer a familiar setting to have a friendly competition amongst your CFD family without the hassle of traveling and expensive entry fees.

2.  Branching right off my first reason for loving Saturday’s events, an even more important reason that I thought it was awesome was because regardless of where everyone finished, damn near EVERYONE PR’d something!  It was amazing watching people push themselves just a little bit harder than they normally would because they had a partner depending on them and they were being watched!  Hopefully that made a lot of you realize you’re capable of more than you generally give yourself credit.

3.  On a selfish note, Saturday was great for me because I got to hang out with my CFD family.  You all are truly like family to me and I’m honored to be a part of such a great group of people.  I’m very proud of everything you’ve accomplished and am very fortunate to have got to know many of you for up to almost 3 years now.  I was even able to meet some family members I hadn’t met yet on Saturday (who, by the way, couldn’t have been more amazed of what was happening in front of them!).

Thanks a lot, CFD, for giving me a reason to work hard every single day.  You all keep me on my toes, and I am very thankful for being where I am.

Let’s forge ahead, get even better, and look forward to the next event!
